You might be in Vermont but organic and small family farms everywhere face these same issues. We live Merced County part of the Central Valley of California "The beard basket of the world" and we still wonder why we have trouble finding local grown food. There are a few groups working on this - but no solid answers yet. My friend Anna and I have started a local organic farmers directory to help, because we could not find local organic food when we were looking. We hope it helps.

i had friends in ladakh ten years ago working with helena norbert-hodge to encourage ladakhis to value their culture--even then, ladakh was starting to get flooded with cheap imported goods--we're scandalized by the chinese destruction of tibetan culture through military means, but on this side of the border, it falls victim to economic warfare

I'm wondering why I can't by roasted barley crunch ('yos') here in Ladakh, anywhere except the tourist-oriented Dzomsa shop which is closed for the winter. Ladakhi locals love it and want to know where I bought it!

most strange...wheat and rice (rice imported from Jammu) have become more common than barley here thanks to govt. policies and fashion.

I guess it is good news that demand is outstripping supply for the CSAs.
