Here in Macon County,TN the Feb 5th tornado left 200 plus houses destroyed, and a few-to-several day phone and power outage (depending on your location in the county)
Wal-Mart, strangely, was the only place in the town of Lafayette that had power (I could not hear a generator out back, though, anyone know whats up with that?)
But anyway, in the midst of all the destruction and darkness, there it shown with full power, full lights and fully operating coolers. Due to the death toll, a solemn crowd appeared at first light to gather emergency supplies. The beer cooler emptied the quickest. Interestingly, the next thing to sell out was all the car battery charges for cell phones, and those emergency cell phone chargers.
The coleman fuel , lanterns and stoves disappeared along with the plain white candles and the size c batteries. I guess during a sad time no one wants to smell "peach delight" candles. Then tarps where sold out, then matches and gas cans (mostly for chainsaws)
Even after the power was restored to the other businesses in town, people seemed to be still hanging out at Wal-mart, talking over the disaster, and just being together as a community.

I don't know how pessimistic he is. A few weeks back I was looking at some photos of the depression shanty towns, and then a recent video of a tent/car city in California. The similarities were striking, at least so far most folks in this country are not yet starving.
