COMPOSER’S PREFACE
There are two parts to this work. The first is songs that I have completed as of March, 2011, and the second is fragments that are not yet finished songs. I am not the world’s most proficient musician by any means, and possibly someone who reads this may come up with a melody and set of chord changes to some of my lyrics that both of us like better than my own idea. If this happens to you, dear reader, please get in touch. I’m flexible!
All finished songs are “published by” Amoghasiddhi Music, BMI
You can hear these songs at the following online locations:
Dmusic–free downloads, plus free downloads of my covers of Grateful Dead, Kate Wolf, and Richard Thompson songs

Passage
Dream I’m running and laughing,
Long hair blowing free;
Wake feeling weak.
No-more than weak-
I try to move, I cannot
Catch my breath. I try to
Speak-I cannot catch my breath. So this is it? –
Maybe not, my Lover says, maybe only
Blood or water, at the
Hospital they can suck it out. –
No, don’t take me there. I’m home, I feel safe here.
Don’t move me.
And now the short winter
Day is ending, and it’s harder to
Breathe, even if I lie still and
Say nothing. -OK, maybe hospital
Will help, buy me time, completion
Of my sweet new house, a few more
Comforting nights With my lover, a few more
Good times with my family,
One more chance To heal old wounds.
To the hospital, to sweet, strong
Oxygen-that almost feels OK–That’s all you can give me?
Maybe I can pull out of this, Maybe go back home tomorrow.
So into the mouth of a fearsome
Machine, to tell what’s with my
Lungs. It blinks and hums
And I gasp for breath
Drowning on dry land
Then back to blessed oxygen
And feeling better, waiting
For results so I can go home again,
Happy to see my father here
With Carrie and Bill, now
Brother Abner arrives also.
We wait and hope.
The doctor comes in,
Small, neat, undynamic.
“It’s not blood or fluid. It’s tumor growth..”
I look at Carrie,
She looks at me.
So this is it, then-
Nothing we can do- this is it.
Now I am going to die-
Soon-but meanwhile,
Please massage my aching
Shoulders, get me
Something to drink,
Slip off the oxygen for
Precious seconds
For soda or a bite of sandwich.
Joke a little to ease tension.
And so a night and a day
And another night slip by,
Time stolen from approaching
Emptiness-time for distant
Family to arrive, time
For one last night feeling
My lover beside me-yes, Here in the ICU.
More and more I only want to rest, eyes
Closed. It’s so hard
To do anything else.
I hear they’re moving me
Soon. There’s nothin’ they can do In the ICU.
Maybe the oxygen is Insufficient because it’s
Really the IV cord?
Or vice-versa?
Why Is this mask on my face?
Carrie, you try it-here,
Take it!? I’m not confused,
You all are…moving
Now, to another room?
Faster, please, faster,
I’m drowning without
Oxygen-this little bottle Is no help at all…
Too exhausted to speak or move,
Even back on the mask that
Once nearly revived me.
Off with it, dammit, and
Let’s get it over with–
One last struggle, met
With calming hands and
Encouraging voices.
But the words lose meaning
As I listen
And I think I know whose face
I think I see a face
Eyes out there burning into mine,
Until I cannot think, but only
Ride my breath
Ride my breath
It’s so hard
I wish I could stop
Or somehow get enough air
I can’t do either.
Pain and the warmth of hands
On my body both fade,
There is only ride
The breath,
Ride the breath
Till a gentle energy
Merges with my struggle
And leads me to calm
And now I can let go-
A long fall through emptiness
Into infinite light–
Free at last…
Flowers
The (E)flowers explode by my (A)altar
In (E)fireworks of purple and (B)red
I (A)know this slow-motion explo(G#m)sion
Is (B)bursting some(A)where in my (E)head
B/A/E
These flowers are cut off sex organs
DNA’s attempt to make more of itself
These flowers will not be successful
This DNA will become something else
Breeze or bees may move their pollen
Their nectar may feed a stray fly
But that is as far as it’s going
These flowers will wither and die
And you, you were just like these flowers
You bloomed, you were cut off, you fell
Leaving so little behind you
What did it mean? Who can tell?
Though your seed was more subtle than flowers
Still your seed grows love like a vine a
nd far stronger than memories of flowers
Your heart ever blooms in my mind
Yes far stronger than memories of flowers
Your heart ever blooms in my mind
ALMOST TALKED ABOUT IT
(Gm/Bb/C/F]
I brought you bags of groceries
On a (Em) winter afternoon
And though (F)I was in a hurry
And said [Dm]I’d be leaving soon
You [F]shared a cup of tea with me
And [C]asked me what was [F]new
[F/C/F]
We [F]talked about the weather
And the [Em]kids and ‘bout your ma
We [F]talked about the government
And [Dm]‘bout our gardens too
But [F]as I rose to leave you there
Deep[C] in my heart I knew
That [Bb]once again we [C]hadn’t talked
The [Bb]way we used to [F]do
Chor:
And I [Bb]almost talked about it
I [Am]almost talked about it
Almost [Gm]talked about the thing
That we don’t [F] talk about no more
But I didn’t [Bb]talk about it
No I didn’t[Am] talk about it
Just said [Gm]goodbye and kept my [Bb]smile on
As I [C]walked on out your [F]door
(Gm/Bb/C/F]
Now we don’t[F] get together
Quite the [Em]way we used to do
And [F]I’ve been there with someone else
Since [Dm] I was there with you
I’m [F]not the man you used to know
That[C] kind of makes me glad
But[Bb] something’s lost [C]between us
I [Bb]feel it, and feel [F]sad
Chor.
I [Bb]almost talked about it
Will I [Am]ever open up?
And [Gm]would you open if I did
Or [F]would you just stay [C]shut?
I’m [Bb]afraid to lose what’s left of us
If [Am]I speak from my heart
I’m [Gm]afraid you’ll smile at [Bb]me and say
“Let’s [C]make a brand-new [F]start.”
Chor.
Will I [Bb]ever talk about it?
Well you[Am] know I kind of doubt it
The feeling[Gm] fades a little further
Every [F]time that I say [C]“no”
Will I [Bb]ever talk about it?
Well you [Am]know I kind of doubt it
My heart just [Gm]grows a little colder
Every[C] time that I say [F]“no”
My heart just[Gm] grows a little [Bb]colder
Every [C]time that I say[F] “no”
…and then she slapped my face
(vamp on C7)
You got a right to feel so proud
You’re such a pretty cloud
Sailin’’ through the blue sky of my life
Although you seem a solid being
Your appearance is deceiving
You’re evaporating everywhere you go
I feel so glad to see you
and when I get close to you
Your most delightful scent pervades my mind
Your sweat’s evaporation
Sends out an invitation
Attracts me in a very basic way
Your chemical allure
Makes me want to explore
The myriad subtleties of your femininity
I’d love for you to have a few on me
I’d love for my caress to set you free
You electrical concrescense
I’d love to touch your essence
I’d love to mix my molecules with yours
Let’s take a long, slow
Afternoon world tour
(break)
But you remain evasive
How can I be persuasive?
Just thinking of you makes my pulse run higher
With the squirrelly thrill of unfulfilled desire
How can we get from frying pan to fire?
So I’m hoping this vibration
This musical sensation
Will realign your electricity
But I bet this little stunt
Is way, way, way too blunt
I’ll never taste your other word that rhymes with that
Come on baby, let me pet your cat
If you want me I will gladly wear a hat
(break)
even if I never drive your car
I still love you as you are
And I guess you’re just the one that got away
At least in this particular act of the play
The sight of you just brightens up my day
Although I know your body’s only mortal clay
And that is all that I have got to say
Bag of skin
(Bm)Had your voice in my (Am)head
Instead of (Bm)His
Filling me with your (Am)view
Of how it (Bm)is
Your view of the (C#m)facts
Your view of the (Dm)plan
Your view of (Em)me
As only half a (Bm)man
“You’re (Em)just a bag
of (Dm)skin” you sneered
“All (C#m)blood and pus and bone”
No (Dm)lovelight sparkled in your eyes
No (Em)spark of love at (Am)all
No (Em)spark of love at (Am)all
No (Em)spark of love at (Bm)all
I followed your foot(Am)steps
Instead of (Bm)Hers
down a lonely (Am)path
that only led from bad to(Bm) worse
you always wanted (C#m)more
Never satis(Dm)fied
Never cared at (Em)all
How much I (Bm)cried
Then (E)one crazy magic day
I (D)found a door in the wall
I (C#m)stepped outside
I (D)saw the sky
I (E)heard the sweet birds (A)call
I (E)heard the sweet birds (A)call
I (E)heard the sweet birds (B)call
She (E)came to me
(D)so did He
And (C#m) they taught me
What I could (B)be
Still hear your (A)voice
Whispering in my (B)head
But I don’t (A)feel
That same old (B)dread
I know what you (C#m)are
I know your (D)place
In the balance I (E)keep
Behind my (B)face
I walk the walk with(A)Her
Talk the talk with (B)Him
’bout what it (A)means to be a bag of (B)skin
‘bout who to (C#m)be in this bag of (D)skin
about how it (E)feels to be a bag of (B)skin
about the spark of (E) love in this bag of (D)skin
about the spark of (C#m) love in this bag of (D)skin
about the spark of (A) love in this bag of (E)skin
about the spark of (A) love in this bag of (E)skin
about the spark of (B) love in this bag of (E6/9)skin(E)
(better than) the best you ever had
I remember (E)New Year’s Day
Nineteen(A)eighty(E)two
I was alone and far from home
And (B)cryin’ to be with you
“I (E)will be with you again”
I (A)heard the singer say
And (E)I meant every tear I cried
That (B)lonely New(A) Year’s (E)Day
Chor:
But deep (C#m)in my (G#m)heart
I could (C#m)feel something (B)missing
From the (C#m)light in my (G#m)eyes
From the (C#m)warmth of my (B)kissing
I was the (A)best you ever had,
You said, and (C#m)honey I believe that’s (B)true
But the (C#m)better man you (B)never had
Was hidden from (A)me as (F#m)well as (E)you
Sure we’d had a rough beginning
I’d almost been on my way
Until you told me about our child
And I swallowed my pride and stayed
So the years sailed by
And our family grew
And the work was pretty good
And the sound of happy laughter rang
In our cabin in the woods
We grew to adore each other
As lovers do adore
But I never had the nerve to tell you
Bout the times when I felt bored
Chor
Then times got hard and my luck ran out
I didn’t know what to do
Dropped one ball after another
I didn’t have a clue
You were overworked and angry
And me I hardly knew
That you were lookin’ to me to lead the way
While I was followin’ you
Chor.
We’d always been nice to each other
Never talked mean or been cruel
Until those days when the lightning flew
Up on our hill with its fool
And when all the smoke had cleared away
And fire no longer filled the air
I was sittin’ here all alone
And you were far away somewhere
(inst. Chor.)
I knew I never wanted
To hurt like that again
So I’ve done just like the old cliché
And got to be my own best friend
I’m learning how to speak my mind
How to laugh at myself
When a man’s got to be a man
And when to leave it on the shelf
Chor:
Now deep in my heart
There’s no longer something missing
I smile when I smile
I kiss when I’m kissin’
It may take another lifetime
To come around again with you
But there’s a better man waitin’ here for you now
Bettter than the best you ever had
BIG SKY COUNTRY
(Em)City dust blowin’ in my window
(Am)City air greasin’ up my skin
(Em)Where’s the trail
That’ll (Am)take me to the river
(Em)Where’s the earth
That (Bm)ain’t fenced (Em)in
(Em)City sounds eating up the silence
(Am)Freeway whinin’ all day and night
(Em)City minds fill me (Am)up with chatter
(Em)No way to stay here and (Bm)make it (Em)right
chor:
(Am)Take me back to big sky country
(Em)Where the air is cool and clean
(Am)Take me back to big sky country
(Em)I need the smell of the (Bm)falling (Em)rain
City lights glow all night around me
City rooms make it dark at noon
When’s a day in the great wide open
When’s a night by the light of the moon
Take me back to big sky country
Mountains glowing in the sundown light
Take me back to big sky country
Let the stars fill up my mind
Once I lived in big sky country
Watched the clouds roll across the sky
Once I walked the fields of heaven
Once I heard the angels cry
(Am)The city came to big sky country
(Em)The city sucked the country dry
(Am)The city sucked me
(Em)Into its belly
The city sucks! The (Bm)city (Em)sucks!
(Bm)I don’t care how good they treat me
(Am)I don’t care how much they pay
(Bm)I don’t care if the girls are pretty
(Am)I don’t care if I have a nice (Em)day
(Em)Gotta get back my big sky country
(Am)Warm wind blowin’ through the tall night trees
(Em)Gotta get back my (Am)big sky country
(Em)Back my liberty and (Bm)back my (Em)peace
BRIGHT EYES
(E)watching for your sails on the hori(A)zon
list(E)ening for a whisper on the (Bm)wind
look(E)ing for a sign from your direc(A)tion
wait(E)ing for my lone(A)liness to end
E/A/Bm/E
dreaming of a glance from your (A)bright eyes
re(E)membering the touch of your(Bm) hand
wish(E)ing you were here so i could (A)show you
all the (E)love(A) that I feel in my heart
E/A/Bm/E
bridge:
but you won’t (Em7)come back
and i’m (Am7)going crazy
though when you were (Em7)with me
you made me (Am7)mad as hell
you treat me (Em7)so mean
just ’cause you (Am7)know i love you
you clueless bitch i’d ought to spank you (Bm7)but…
i love you (E)too much
i could (A)never hurt you
just want to (E)hold you
and keep you (A)safe from harm
you’ve had a (E)hard life
girl i’m the (A)one can heal you
you can (E)trust me
i’ll be (A)there for you
so baby (E)come home
your (A)lover’s waiting
baby (E)come home
back in (A)to my arms
so baby (E)come home
your man (A)is waiting
baby (E)come home
back in(A)to my arms
E/A/Bm/E
BUNGEE JUMP
(vamp on C7)
I love to daily bungee jump
The blazing bath of otherworld
Plunge into reality
Through worlds where gods and demons play
Swing from my pineal gland
Into shining emptiness
OM AH HUNG, OM AH HUNG HRI
OM AH HUNG, OM AH HUNG HRI
I love to sit and speak the words
That open up the magic door
To taste the sweetly cooking foods
That help me know what life is for
And then return into this world
Knowing in my heart there’s so much more
OM AH HUNG, OM AH HUNG HRI
OM AH HUNG, OM AH HUNG HRI
I know someday the strap will break
And leave me plunging on and on
I’ll thrill to find what path I take
In life’s last great adventure gone
OM AH HUNG, OM AH HUNG HRI
OM AH HUNG, OM AH HUNG HRI
BURNING WOMAN
[C]I love a woman she’s a [F]burning wo[C]man
I’m gonna love her just as [F]long as I [C]can
And she loves me, my [F]burning wo[C]man
She loves me, I’m her [F]burn[G]ing man
[C]I love her body though her [F]body’s burn[C]ing
I love her soul though it’s only [F]passin’ [C]through
I love her heart, love her [F]heart that holds [C] me
I love to hear her say “[F] I[G]love you”
[C]Some days the heat just [F]drive us cra[C]zy
Some days it’s a [F]white-hot [C]glow
We love to mingle in the [F]heat of the mo[C]ment
Catch a little fire and [F]let [G]it go
(break)
[C]Some days the heat just [F]drive us craz[C]y
Some day we gonna[F] lie so [C]cold
Dance in the fire, in the [F]embers in the ash[C]es
Dance the slowin’ rhythm of [F]grow[G]in’ old
[C]Bye, bye, bye, my [F]burnin’ wo[C]man
We’re here together and we’re [F]already [C]gone
Bless your, bless your, heart for [F]holdin’ [C]me
Bless the fire for [F]burn[G]in’ strong
Flesh gonna sag, gonna [F]fold, gonna [C]wrinkle
Flesh gonna melt in the [F]twinkle of an [C]eye
Bones gonna shatter, gonna [F]burn down to [C]ashes
Ashes gonna scatter in the [F]wind, in the [G]sky

CHEWING SANSKRIT BUBBLE GUM
C/Bb/F/C/Bb/F
Time was I could make no sense
(Bb)of the world around (F)me
Unexpected accidents
and (Bb)troubles would confound(F) me
til I (Bb)found a brighter (F)sun
(C)CHEWING SAN(Bb)SKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
C/Bb/F
(C)CHEWING SANSKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
(Bb)helps me keep from (F)feeling glum
I’m (C)happy when the (F)time has come
to (Bb)chew my (F)Sanskrit Bubble Gum
’cause nothing’s better, no, (F)not none, than
(C)CHEWING SAN(Bb)SKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM(3X)
Time was I could never trust
my (Bb)lovers and (F)relations
They’d blow me off without a thought
to (Bb)chase some new sensa(F)tion
But I made all the (F)phonies run
(C)CHEWING SAN(Bb)SKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
C/Bb/F
(C)CHEWING SANSKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
(Bb)chase my flakey (F)friends away
(C)CHEWING SANSKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
(Bb)better people (F)come to stay
So I (C)do it ev(F)ery day–
(C)Chew my San(Bb)skrit (F)Bubble Gum (3X)
Old age, death and sickness
(Bb)had me in a (F)tizzy
Couldn’t just ignore them
Couldn’t (Bb) stay that (F)busy
But it all rolls into (F)one
(C)CHEWING SAN(Bb)SKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
C/Bb/F
(C)CHEWING SANSKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
(Bb)ain’t no pana(F)cea
(C)CHEWING SANSKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
(Bb)it’s still a good (F)idea
(C)life’s tough choices are (F)more fun
(C)CHEWING SAN(Bb)SKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM(3X)
Life still ain’t easy, that’s for sure
And (Bb)as for fair, for(F)get it
What must happen, surely will
what (Bb)can I do but (F)let it
(bridge)
(Ebm7)Don’t get me wrong
I feel the pain
I’ll do all I can
again and again
to stop this world’s slide into hell
but if it slides, i’ll sigh
and say,”oh well”
and, down there with the world,
in hell, I’ll sweat, and grin
and start right in and
(C)CHEW MY SAN(Bb)SKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM (3X)
(C)CHEWING SANSKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
(Bb)adds to life’s di(F)mensions
(C)Blowing Sanskrit bubbles al(F)ways
(Bb)eases all my (F)tensions
I (C)bow to the Mother-Father, (F)Daughter and Son and
(C)Chew my Sans(Bb)krit (F)Bubble Gum (3X)
The satisfactions of this world
are (Bb)always tempo(F)rary
Trying to hold on to them
(Bb)only makes life (F)scary
So, unplug your misplaced thumb
and (C)Chew some San(Bb)skrit (F)Bubble Gum
C/Bb/F
(C)CHEWING SANSKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
(Bb)mind and mouth feel (F)fresh and sweet
(C)CHEWING SANSKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM
(Bb)flavor that cannot (F)be beat
(C)Melts my habits, not my (F) teeth
(C)CHEWING SAN(Bb)SKRIT (F)BUBBLE GUM (7X)
DOIN’ THE THING
E/A
Imagine (A)waking up and being Michael (D)Jackson
(A)Imagine waking up (E)him
Imagine (A)bein’ a lost little (D)rich boy
Who (E)don’t like the colour of his (A)skin
(A)imagine being some(D)body
Who got (A)treated like him as a (E)kid
I (A)shudder when I think a(D)bout it,
The (E)awful things that somebody (A)did to him
chor:
And now he’s (D)doin’ the thing that was (A)done to him
Not even (E)thinkin’ twice ’bout why it (A)come to him
He’s (D)passin’ his pain on (A)down through time
Like (E)you do yours and(A) I do mine
E/A
Imagine waking up and (A)being the former White House (D)resident
The (A)man who once was our (E)President
Your (A)coked-out brain makes it (D)hard to think
Of (E)anything except how bad you (A)want a drink
(A)You’re all bottled (D)up inside
From(A) all the years your parents (E)hurt your pride
But (A)still you stand tall you won’t ad(D)mit you lied
You don’t (E)care how many people (A)have to die
You think you’re (D)winnin’ the game but you don’t (A)understand
Why it (E)all turns to dust and slips (A)through your hands
You (D)think you gonna (A)get what you want
But you (E)ain’t gonna like what you (A)get
chor.
(A)You got your problems and (D)I got mine
But we (A)do alright, yeah (E)most of the time
And (A)here and there I’ve (D)taken a fall
But I (E)never drove the whole world (A)into a wall
I (A)done some things I wish I (D)never did
But (A)none of ‘em was messin’ with (E)little kids
And (A)I have been in (D)denial before
But (E)never bad enough to set the (A)world to war
And the only thing I can (D)think to do
Is, if we want (E)them to stop, we (A)all got to
stop (D)doin’ the things that was (A)done to us
Start (E)thinkin’ twice ’bout why it (A)come to us
Stop (D)passin’ our pain on (A)down through time
Yours, (E)Michael’s, Georgie’s, every(A)body’s, and mine (3X)
Stop (D)passin’ our pain on down through (A)time
DROUGHT SONG
C/FC/C/G/F/C
When the forest’s (C)gone, then the water goes
The willows die when the creek don’t flow
Thunder rolls, but the rain don’t fall
The country’s quiet, no birds call
Chor:
It’s gonna get (F)dry, dry, dry, (C)dry
It’s gonna get (G)dry, (F) dry,(C) dry
Flowers (C)bloom, but the bees don’t buzz
Why is this so? Because, because
This world’s been bent to the ways of men
Something’s gonna give, it ain’t if but when
Chor.
I can’t tell you just what’s gonna be(F)(Bb)(F)
But it’s (C) gonna get tougher, just (G)wait and (C) see
(F)(Bb)(F)
Or better (C) yet, don’t wait at all
Start listening for your inner call
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
And when you can, help out yourself
Chor.
Maybe this (C)earth will be green again
Maybe we’ll learn to live as friends
Maybe we’ll just hit the wall
I think it’s way too close to call
Whatever happens, let it feed your soul
Work on your part, remember the whole
Chor 2x
THE FIRE SERMON
(vamp on F7)
After the fire of youth,
The fire of age:
Flesh withers and sags,
Joint-grease melts away
Dark hair burns through grey
To white ash.
Still, a subtler fire shines in your eyes:
Alchemical, inviting:
Solve et coagulo;
Distill, if we dare, a gem
That will gleam undiminished
When time has had its way
With our transient bones.
II.
We meet
And however close we become, for however long
We’re going to be apart again so very soon, for so very long.
That’s why I’m learning to love the pain
Of letting you go
over and over and over again
III..
These bodies we think we are–
I can’t tell if they’re melting or burning
Or just drying up and blowing away.
And still–surprise and delight
To feel so healed
In the shelter of your crumbling arms
IV.
Making love
by the dying bonfire of our youth–
embers glowing, hot,
but not to be rekindled:
it’s all to ashes from here.
You stand before me
strong, naked and beautiful–
as I watch with loving lust
you fade from maiden
to crone, and I remember:
All too soon our eyes
will grow dull, our flesh
rot and sag from crumbling bones.
Let us drink deep from our pleasure
while we can, even as
every joy tastes of pain,
every gentle touch burns
and freezes, each
tender kiss, the kiss of death.
And when death does come
as my lover and yours, we shall
shrink the less from his embrace,
having yielded with such vision
and loving grace
to each other.
FREE FROM YOU
(Bm7)You won every argument You won every fight
Always had the last word In the middle of the night
You so sure of yourself You come on so strong
You always had an answer But your answers was wrong
You knew all the faults Of everything and everybody
Always had a good reason To put em all on the shelf
You knew what was wrong With everything and everybody
Everybody that is, Except yourself

GREAT OPENNESS
(co-written with Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal, who suggested that the Sanskrit word gate, usually translated as “gone,” should rather be understood as “open,” and uttered the words “open, completely open, not closing down,” which I heard second-hand and put to music, first in a symphonic arrangement, and then as a reggae song.)
[A]Inconceivable, inexpressible Great Openness
Unborn, unceasing, by nature like the sky
Experienced by self-reflexive awareness’ discerning, pristine cognition
Mother of the victorious ones of the three times
I pay homage to you
Bhagavati Prajnaparamita Hrirdaya
Chomden Dewa Sherab Chipa Roltu Chinpe Nyingpo
Homage to the Great Openness, Mother of us all
[A]Once I [E]came to a[A] mountain [D] top
With [A]you, our [D]Lord, and the [E]rest
and [A]while we [E] sat so [A]still with [D]him
in [A]bliss on that [D]high [E]crest
he [A]opened
he [E]opened
so [A]completely [D]opened
so [A]far beyond [D]closing [E]down
he [A]opened
he [D]opened
so [A]far beyond [D]open
he could [A]never close [D]down [A]again
and [A]I could [E]see
that [A]you could [D]see
just[A] what it [D]was he [E]saw
so [A]I begged [E]you
to [A]tell me [D]true
how [A]I could [D]see it [A]too
you [A]told me ”[E]form is [A]empti[D]ness
and [A]empti[D]ness is [E]form
they [A]are not se[E]parate [A]in any [D]way
their[A] union [D]is the [A]norm
All [A]feeling, [E]too is [A]empti[D]ness
and [A]empty [D]is per[E]ception
[A]men[E]tality is [A]empty, [D]too
and [A]empty is [D]conscious[A]ness
no [A]thing is [E]born
and [A]no thing [D]dies
no [A]purity, no [D]impuri[E]ty
[A]no thing [E]shrinks
and [A]no thing [D]grows
and [A]yet, things [D]seem to [A]be
there [A]are no [E]forms in [A]empti[D]ness,
no [A]feelings, per[D]ceptions, or [E]thoughts
no [A]conscious[E]ness, no [A]eye, no [D]ear
no[A] nose, no tongue, no [D]body, no [A]mind
no[A] appearance, no [E]sound, no [A]smell
no [A]taste, no [D]touch, no laws of [E]form
no [A] ignor[E]ance, no [A]end of [D]it
no [A]death, no [D]end of [E]death
there[A] is no [E]pain,
and [A] yet there’s [D]pain,
without [A]beginning, [D]without [A]end
there [A]is no [E]way a[A]way from [D]pain
nor [A]wisdom [D]to im[E]part
there’s [A]not a [E]thing that [A]we can [D]do
and [A]yet, we’ve [D]done it [A]all
since [A]there is no[E]thing [A]you can [D]do
be [A]open [D]to your [E]life
[A] Do not [E]cling to or fear what [A]comes to [D]you
be it [A]bliss or [D]be it [A]strife
and [A]that is [E]what our [A]Master’s [D]done
that’s [A]made him [D]Lord of [E]all
he’s [A]given [E]us a [A]simple [D]prayer
To [A]open[D] up our [E]hearts
it’s [A]always been [E]true
it’s [A]true right [D]now
it’ll [A]be true for[D]ever [A]more
“May I be [A]open so [E]open
so [A]completely [D]open
may I [A]never close [D]down a[E]gain
May I be [A]open
so [E]open
so [A]far beyond [D]open
May I [A]never close [D]down [A]again”
and [A]then our [E]Lord a[A]rose from [D]bliss
and [A]smiled at [D]one and [E]all
“good, [A]good,” he [E]said, “for [A]thus it [D]is
ex[A]actly [D]as you [E]spoke
o[A]pen your [E]heart to [A]all that [D]is
and the [A]whole world [D]will re[A]joice”
and [A]when he [E]smiled and [A]spoke to [D]us
it [A]made our [D]hearts so [E]glad
in[A]spired us [E]all to [A]open [D]up
and [A]give the [D]best we [A]had
May I be [A]open so [E]open
so [A]completely [D]open
may I [A]never close [D]down a[E]gain
May I be [A]open
so [E]open
so [A]far beyond [D]open
May I [A]never close [D]down [A]again

EmCD 2x
we (D)loved to dance to the (C)Grateful Dead
let that (D)sweet, wild music rear-(C)range our heads
and (G)nowadays it may (D)sound absurd
but the (G)music brought us wisdom be(D)yond all words
EmCD 2x
then Garcia went from (C)shrooms to smack
now he’s (D)gone, gone, gone, ain’t (C)comin’ back
and (G)so many of my friends have grown (D)old and scared
their (G)bodies live on but their (D)hearts ain’t there

I WISH I WAS A ROCK N’ ROLL STAR
(F)I wish I was a rock n’roll star
Not for the mansion, not for the car
Not for the groupies, I just want your ear
To give you a message that’ll make your way clear
And a rhythm that’ll make ya feel good
Something I can’t say although it’s well understood
‘Cause when we all sang
(Bb)“Everybody get together gonna love one another”
And when we all sang
(F)“All you need is love’
And when we all sang
(Bb)“Positive Vibration, (C)Yeah!”
You know we (F)made the world a better place
With open hearts and a smile on our face
Lonely and separate no more
No need to take sides, no need to keep score
And I wanna see us all there again
No way to lose and nothin’ to win
We could all be (Bb)dancin, dancin, dancin in the s(C)treets, yeah
(Bb)It don’t hafta be about me
I’m just an (Eb)old guy who sings off key
But some(Bb)body’s gotta show the way
“Cause we (Eb)all need a better day
And there’s (F)nothin’ like rock n’ roll
To get that (Bb)feelin’ movin’ in your (C)soul
So it’s (F)all been said before?
(Who cares!)
Get up, get(Bb) down and do it some more
Come on, (F)come on come on, come on
Come on, (Bb)come on come on, come on
Come on, (C)come on come on, come on (f7)

G/G7/G6/G4

(G)Nothing a(G7)round you but (G6)sea and sky(Gm7)
(G7)Suddenly you no(G6)tice you’re being quite (G4)foolish
(Gm7)You’re kicking a hole in the boat!
(Gm7)We cheer about sports and we worry ‘bout crime
(C7)Look to the economy for peace of mind
Lay (Gm7)up a lot of treasure that will only rot
We’ve (C7)heard about the Truth, we just don’t give it much thought
We’re on a (C)leaky ship with no (G)lifeboats
(F)Playing such foolish (C)games
We’re all (F)winners or we’re all(Em) losers
We’re (Dm)all in it just the (C)same C7/Gm7
It’s (Gm7)dryin’ up here and it’s meltin’ down there
(C7)Used to be a forest but now it’s bare
(Gm7)Industry burnin’ a hole in the sky
(C7)Put the pedal to the metal till the tank runs dry!
We’re on a (C)leaky ship with no(G) lifeboats
Wa(F)ter is pourin’ (C)in
If (F)we don’t get it to(Em)gether
Soon (Dm)it could be sink or (C)swim C7/Gm7
(Gm7)We’re cryin out to the stars but they ain’t talking back
(C7)Ain’t no planet ‘round here that’ll cut us any slack
(Gm7)Where will we go when we use up earth?
(C7)C’mon, who’s gonna give me the answer first?
We’re on a (C)leaky ship with no (G)lifeboats
Don’t (F)know where there’s any (C)land
Ain’t even (F)got a life pre(Em)server
How (Dm)long ‘til we under(C)stand? C7/Gm7
(Gm7)Who built the boat? It’s a mystery
(C7)Maybe worth a little inquiry
Is there a (Gm7)where that we’re going and a why that we’re here?
Let’s (C7)plug up the leaks and get it clear!
We’re on a (C)leaky ship with no (G)lifeboats

LIGHT UP MY LIFE
(E7)I was just a ball of rock and ice
Plunging on through (C#m)space
(E7)Till I crossed a beam of light
Shining from your(C#m) face
You (E7)pulled me in
You spun me round
Gave me a sense of (C#m)place
(E7)Time began and you became
The focus of my (C#m)days

Crackled in our (C#m)gaze

(E7)Your loving is the holy spark
That helps me (C#m)understand
The (E7)subtle dancing interplay
That bridges God and (C#m)man
And(E7) lets me know the steps I take
Are all part of your (C#m)plan
Light (A)up my life

LOCANA
music: funky vamp on m7 chord
locana lady queen of cups
lady scarcely seen
floats in water, is the water
shades of blue and green
so soft and moist
that all that’s hard
swears she don’t exist
but when i slow and float with her
what i find is this
changing levels, rising clouds
a higher view appears
letting go of all desire,
of all my hopes and fears
this shadow play’s a shadow play
you are reality
i’m just an actor on your stage
there is no one who’s me
lady on your lotus throne
shine your light through me
purify me, don’t deny me
let me, let me see
may all that i do be for you
do what you will with me
bless me to be one with you
and bring this world to peace

got the revolution, got the revolution
saw where greed and anger led
got the revolution, got the revolution

OM VAJRAPANI HUNG….
we walked right in
we sat right down
we let our minds roll on
turned the angels and the demons loose
we let them have their fun
we took on all comers in our youthful pride
tryin’ to break on through to the other side
we did magic in the hills
we did magic in the city
we were stormin’ heaven
we were shown no pity
many fell dead or wounded from within
years sped by, our ranks grew thin
OM VAJRAPANI HUNG
when I set out to save the world
victory seemed so certain
nothing between here and paradise
but the flimsiest of curtains
now we’re rockin’ on the edge of hell
but I have learned my lessons well
i will not give up what i know
no matter what wind may blow
i pledge that i will always be
a magic revolutionary

You (A)never quite got what a (G#m)woman’s gotta have
You (E)never (A)felt (B)satisfied(E)
Chor: hip enough
You did a (E)thousand trips with Phil and (A)Jerry
Rubbed (E)elbows with all the other (B)stars
(A)Sat with the gurus and the(G#m) teachers
(A)Did all the weekend semi(B)nars
You’ve (A)heard it all and now you’d (G#m)rather
(E)Drink (A)fancy beer in (B)fancy bars(E)
Chor: rich enough
So what can I say? I know you (A)know it
I know you know it all so very (B)well
And (A)baby, you could wake up if you (G#m)wanted
But there’s (A)no way I can break your (B)spell
You’re all (A)alone ’cause you won’t lift a (G#m)finger
To (E)get (A)yourself (B)out of hell(E)
You’re not (A)satisfied
(E)Watcha gonna do?
You can’t (A)find a man
Who’s (E)cool enough for you
You’re not (A)satisfied
No (E)matter what you do
You can’t (A)find a man
Who’s (E)hot enough for you
You’re not (A)satisfied
(E)Watcha gonna do?
You can’t(A) find a man
Who’s (E)kind enough for you
You’re not (A)satisfied
No (E)matter whatcha do
You can’t (A)find a man
Who’s (E)hip enough for you
You’re not (A)satisfied
(E)Watcha gonna do?
You can’t (A)find a man
Who’s (E)rich enough for you
You’re not (A)satisfied
No (E)matter whatcha do
You can’t (A)find a man
Who’s (E)hung enough for you
You’re not (A)satisfied
(E)Watcha gonna do?
You can’t (A)find a man
Who’s (E)fool enough to do ya
(B)Baby watcha (A)gonna do now?(E)

NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET
(Cm7)Precious and fleeting
Pressure increasing
I’m weeding my garden
With a gun to my head
I’m weeding my garden
With a gun to my head
Joyful and gentle
Angry elementals
I’m playing a song
With a gun to my head
I’m playing a song
With a gun to my head
Smelling the flowers
Counting down hours
I protest the war
With a gun to my head
I protest the war
With a gun to my head
(Gm)Breathing deep and letting go
Taking every pleasure slow
Every minute means so much
Every smile and every touch
Any moment could be interrupted
By this crazy blue-eyed clown
With his gun to my head
By this crazy blue-eyed clown
With his gun to my head
By this crazy blue-eyed clown
(Fm7)With his gun
To my (Cm7)head
Rising in silence
While the world sinks in violence
I’m sitting zazen
With a gun to my head
I’m sitting zazen
With a gun to my head
Caressing and sighing
While children are dying
I make love to you
With a gun to my head
I make love to you
With a gun to my head
Loving and caring
Angry, despairing
I’m praying for peace
With a gun to my head
I’m praying for peace
With a gun to my head
I’m praying for peace
With a (Fm7)gun
(Gm7)To my (Cm7)head
OLD DOG
AmFC
(as in end of chor.)
I [C]turn to you
like a [F]tree to the sun
before i [C]even think about it
girl, it’s [F]how I’m built to [C]run
You light up my days
with your [F]shining, happy beams
But I’m [G]nothing to you,
I’m just [F]part of the [C]scene
‘Cause you’re [G]young enough
you could be my [C]daughter
what do i [G]think,
you’re gonna look my [C]way?
well i’m[G] old enough
i oughta know [C]better
[Am]this old dog
[F]already had his [C]day
when a man my age
chase a [F]girl like you
they [C]call him a fool
and I [F]suppose it’s [C]true
but darlin’, i still dream
[F]day and night
that a [G]change is gonna come
and [F]turn on your love[C]light
Cause if you got [G]loose enough
to get experi[C]mental
i might re[G]sist your eyes
but just for [C]show
i’m still [G]young enough
I can get full [C]frontal
and i [Am]know all kinda things
yer young [F]boys don’t [C]know
Yeah if you got [G]loose enough
to get experi[C]mental
i could [G]teach you things
i could take you[C] there
know how to [G]rev you up
and keep you [C]rollin’
[Am]slippin” my sneaky snake
[F]through your short [C]hair
youth ran through my fingers
and [F]now it’s gone
it’ll [C]happen to you, girl
don’t [F]get me wrong
have mercy on a man
whose [F]time has gone by
someday a [G]mirror gonna show you
[F]something’ll make you [C]cry
but i’m [G]old enough
i could be your [C]daddy
not that [G]my tailbrain
really gives a [C]whup
‘sides the [G]thought o’me
probly make your [C]flesh crawl
so I [Am]hope I’ve got the sense
to [F]just shut [C]up
yeah, you’re [G]young enough
you could be my [C]daughter
what do i [G]think,
you’re gonna look my [C]way?
well i’m [G]old enough
i oughta know [C]better
this [Am]old dog
already [F]had his [C]day
well i’m [G]old enough
i oughta know [C]better
this [Am]old dog
already [F]had his [C]day
this [Am]old dog
just wants [F]another [C]day
PART TIME LOVE
I’d (G)known her so long and she looked so fine
I told her I’d like to make her mine
She said “I still love my ex but I think that you
Are (D)kind of all right and you(G7) just might (G)do.”
Chor:
(C)Part-time love, (G)part-time love
(D)Better stay away from (G)part-time love
(C)Pray to the Lord in (D)heaven up above
(C)Keep you from fallin’ into (G7)part-time (G)love
On a Saturday night she took me in
It felt so right, well it wasn’t no sin
She told me I was her tender man
But (D)next time I saw her she was (G7)holdin’ his (G)hand
Chor.
On a Tuesday she said, “Let’s kiss some more,
I like you a lot.” Well, you know the score
No sooner had I let her go to my head
Than (G)Wednesday morning she was(G7) in his (G)bed
Some days she (D)loves me
Some days she (G)don’t
Some days she (Am)will
Some days she (D)won’t
I’ve (G)always been an open-minded guy
But part-time love is makin’ me cry
I can never tell whether to stop or go
I (D)can’t even tell how I’m sup(G7)posed to (G)know
Chor.
SAM AND TABADRA’S LOVE SONG
(G)I was making love with you
Your (Am)hair was fair, your eyes were blue
And (G)in that rain of bliss I knew
That (Dm)that was what was really true
And (Am)then I fell asleep and dreamed
An(Bm)other, slightly different scene
Where (Am)I was making love with you
Your (Bm)hair was black, your eyes were blue
It (Am)seemed just like reality
It (Em)meant so very much to me
And (Bm)then I fell asleep and dreamed
An(C#m)other, slightly different scene
Where(Bm) I was making love with you
Your (C#m)hair was red, your eyes were green
And (F#m)that was real and not a dream
And(C) then I fell asleep and dreamed
An(Dm)other, slightly different scene
Where (C)I was making love with you
Your (Dm)eyes were red, your hair was green
It(G) felt so real I had to scream
And (Dm)then I fell asleep and dreamed
That (Em)I was making love with you
Your (Dm)hair was fair, your eyes were blue
And(Em) in that rain of bliss I knew
That (Am)that was what was really true
And (Em)then I fell asleep and dreamed
Another (F#m)slightly different scene…
(Phishy jam-type instrumental break centered on Em)
(F)You and I were making love
A (Bm)storm was raging far above
But (F)in the calm below the storm
(Em)We were mating, wet and warm
And (F)as our tentacles entwined
I (Em)knew the essence of my mind
And (F)then I fell asleep and dreamed
An(G)other, very different scene
You (F)danced above me, wrapped in flames
I (C)knew, but dared not speak, your name
I (G)was a corpse, you were a queen
And (F)this was what had always been
And(G) then I fell asleep and dreamed
Your (Am)eyes were black, your skin was green
And (G)we were making love again,
For(Dm)ever free from all our pain
And (Am)then I fell asleep and dreamed
That (Bb)we were old and full of dreams
Ex(Am)hausted passions, fruitless schemes
And (Em)all the many things we’d done
We (Bm)were forgetting, one by one
But (Am)I could still remember this
To (Bb)fall asleep, and dream your kiss
In (C)any form that we assume
(Bb)sperm and egg or sun and moon
(G)From the dance of our embrace
(Am)Spring all of form and
All….of (C)space
Sometimes
(A)Sometimes I’m neuro(A7)tic
And (A)sometimes I’m psycho(A7)tic
And (A)sometimes I’m as nor(A7)mal as(A6) can (E)be
(A7)Sometimes I am manic
And (D7)there are times I panic
Cause I’m (A7)sure there’s someone out there af(E)ter (A)me
Chor:
And (D)sometimes I sit and watch myself
Watch(A)ing myself watch myself
And (D)sometimes I just sit and watch my(E)self
And (A)sometimes I’m the (A7)one
Who’s (D7)watching me watch myself
And (E7)sometimes I’m the one who’s (D7)watching (A)me
(A)Sometimes I get a (A7)great idea
(A)Sometimes I get (A7)lost
And (A)sometimes I completely disap(E)pear
(A7)Sometimes I feel like making love
Some(D7)times my body hurts
And (A7)sometimes I feel really re(E)ally (A)weird
Chor.
(A)Sometimes I know I’m (A7)not the one
(A)Living through all these (A7)trials
(A)Sometimes that’s who I really seem to(E) be
And (A7)sometimes I remember
What (D7)I came here to do
And (A7)that is when I feel so (E)clear and (A)free
Chor., then
And (D)sometimes I sit and watch myself
Watch(A)ing myself watch myself
And (D)sometimes I just sit and watch my(E)self
And (D)sometimes I’m the (A)one
Who (A7)knows he ain’t no (D7)one
But (A)how can (D)no one
(E)Know they ain’t no (A)one?
Yeah, how can (D)no one
(E)Know they ain’t no (A)one?
TERRORISTS IN THE HEARTLAND
Chorus:
(Am)TERRORISTS IN THE HEARTLAND
(G)Pledged to a crazy creed
(Am)TERRORISTS IN THE HEARTLAND
(G)Doin’ crazy deeds
(Am)TERRORISTS IN THE HEARTLAND
(G)They ain’t playin’ fair
(Am)Poison in our water
(Em)Denial in the (Am)air
Gotta tell you ’bout some terrorists
(G)Done some nasty stuff
Poured (Am)poison in our water
As (G)if that weren’t enough
Left (Am)heavy metal sludge
In (G)peoples’ yards and homes
(Am)Tore up an ecosystem
(G)From the mountains to the sea
(Am)Claimed it was nobody’s fault
(G)Claimed it was a natural thing
When I(Am) see their pasty faces,
(G)I just have to (Am)sing:
Chor.
(Am)Then the terrorists issued a communique
Said, (G)“Hey, y’all we’re the TVA
And (Am)all that we have got to say
Is don’t worry ’bout a thing–
It’s (Am)just that ol’ clean coal ash,
It (G)won’t hurt you none
It (Am) couldn’t be what makes you sick
We (G) didn’t spread it all THAT thick
So (Am)any disease is in your head
And (G)ignore the mountains we’ve removed–
No (Am)problem there that can be proved”
And (G)that’s what the terrorists said
(Em)TVA: (D)Terrorists Violating Americans
(Em)TVA: (D)Terrorists Violating Americans
(Em)TVA: (D)Terrorists Violating Americans
(Em)spreadin’ arsenic, uranium, mercury, lead
spreadin’ arsenic, uranium, mercury, lead
spreadin’ arsenic, uranium, mercury, lead
(D)every single one of them will kill you (Am)dead
chor.
(Am)Who’ll chase down these terrorists?
(G)Who, I wonder, who?
These (Am)terrorists are the people
Ruling (G)over me and you
They’re the (Am)ones who own the papers,
Choose what’s (G)broadcast on TV
They’re the (Am)ones in public office
It don’t (G)matter which party
And they’ll all (Am)pardon each other
Or just (G)look the other way
And they’ll (Am)pocket every penny
And they (G)don’t care what we say
chor.
coda:
(Am)They spell “profit” with an “f”
So I say, “f ‘em all….
the trees are dying
(heavy drumbeat, vamp on your favorite m7 chord)
the trees are dying, dying
the trees are dying, dying
the trees are dying, dying, dying
they die for lumber
they die for firewood
they die for paper to fill landfills
they die for pasture
they die for highways
they die for stripmalls
and trailer parks
they die from acid
that eats their leaves off
they die from insects beneath their bark
they die from dryness
they die from ozone
they die ’cause goats strip them bare
when too many trees die
we can all say goodbye
without them we won’t last long

WALKING IN MY TOWN
(modal, any key, with a raga feel)
I was walking in my town
On a lovely summer day
Cars were cruisin’ all around
Homes of wood and brick and stone
And then I saw an Indian
Hunting bow stretched in his hands
Taking aim at a buffalo
Grazing in the forest deep
Next moment walked at glacier’s edge
Then left footprints on the beach
Next breath I swam in open sea
Then through swamp dodged dinosaur
And then I strode o’er dry, bare land
Til’ rocks melted beneath my feet
Feet then flailed in empty space
I blinked, and found familiar street
OM AMI DEWA RHI…….
As I was walking in my town
I thought about my grocery list
I thought about the ones I love
Who I would and wouldn’t kiss
I thought about what joins us all
The mysteries of death and birth
I thought of glimpses I have had
Of why I came down to this earth
My heart opened with gratitude
To all of those who’ve gone before
I made a promise to myself
To leave this world a better place
Then I remembered margarine
OM AMI DEWA RHI
I was walking in my town
Greed and ignorance all around
I saw the future they’d create
Sun beat down on cracked concrete
Abandoned houses, burned out cars
Grass and trees all dry and dying
I saw no squirrels, I heard no birds
Just the rat and the cockaroach
Then the sun exploded in the sky
Bye-bye used up world, bye bye
Then I saw another way
On that pleasant summer day
Saw the path of love and caring
Saw the path of bliss and sharing
Gone city smells, gone city sounds
Homes and gardens scattered ‘round
Clear running streams and leafy groves
A human race of loving friends
A sweet, green planet ‘till the end
When, of course, the sun explodes
There are two paths we can take
What choice do we daily make?
OM AMI DEWA RHI….

(A4)We are water mostly water
All the water in us is a(E)live
(E7)Every hour every moment
Water always passing through us

PART TWO—FRAGMENTS
These are incomplete songs. Some of them just need a final tweak and some chords to go with the melody, others are just a few lines, a hook, or a chorus. If any of them inspire you to complete them, I am open to co-writing. Get in touch!
ALL FALL DOWN
want to see it all fall down
see it hit the ground
hope i’m still around
when it all falls down
ALL THAT IS SOLID MELTS INTO LIGHT
It starts with a feeling
I can hardly describe
When I see you before me
And feel you inside
Your smile is so joyful
Your eyes open wide
And ALL THAT IS SOLID MELTS INTO LIGHT
I love to be near you
You nourish my soul
I give myself to you
Your warm heart of gold
I’m feeling so willing
My eyes open wide
And ALL THAT IS SOLID MELTS INTO LIGHT
Never ever knew
Anyone else like you
I just love what you do
To me
We’re so happy together
Wish the whole world could know
This same loving feeling
That never grows cold
There’s nothing else like when
Your arms open wide
And ALL THAT IS SOLID MELTS INTO LIGHT
All the doors that wouldn’t open
All the doors that wouldn’t open
all the girls that wouldn’t do
all the times I didn’t get it
all that brought me here to you
I often tasted bitter failure
growing up was just no good
lacking in all social graces
rejected in my neighborhood
didn’t fit among the misfits
clashed with all the kids with class
couldn’t hold a job to save myself
I just gave up and let it pass
no one but my mother loved me
as I wandered in the world
all my thoughts were of myself
and why I couldn’t keep a girl
you could feel the heart within me
trace the path my footsteps trod
you knew the tortured road I traveled
was the way that leads to God
bless you girl, for steppin with me
bless the ways you ease my pain
join my broken parts together,
cure me, make me whole again
if not for pain, would I
have met you?
Would another door
have brought me here?
If some other woman loved me
would I even know your name?
All the doors that wouldn’t open
all the girls that wouldn’t do
all the times I didn’t get it
all that brought me here to you
ALMOST SUPERMAN
I was right and you were wrong
you were here but now you’re gone
why should I give a damn?
Safe in my fortress of solitude
I’m almost superman
A WOMAN, A WORLD
I see your smile as bright as sunlight
Look into your eyes as blue as rain
Feels like there’s a chance that we could
Share each other’s joy and pain
chor:
I look at you and see a world I don’t know
I look at you you and see a place we could go
You look at me and I think you know
We could be another world
your laugh delights my waking hours
i’m glad that i can make you smile
o won’t you dance with me a moment
entwine our souls for just a while
chor.
some live in worlds of peace and plenty
some live in worlds of toil and snares
whatever world we might live in
i’d be happy with you there
chor.
but to join your planet’s motion
i’d have to leave the earth i’m on
creating sorrow and bereavement
lord, they’d miss me when i’s gone
chor.
so, pretty world, spin on without me
best wishes to you as you go
may the goddess in you flower
blessing power from you flow
chor.
BIG GREEN
Some folks like to vote
for big red
wanna get theirs,
don’t care
whose blood gets shed
other folks gonna vote for big blue
but big blue blows
and you know it’s true
makes a lotta promises it don’t keep
big blue dreams
of a nation of sheep
so big red bleeds
and big blue blows
and all they really wanna do
is grab ya by the nose
me, I just gotta go for the green
and I ain’t talkin’ money, dontcha know what I mean
it’s the go-ahead color
it’s the color of trees
it’s the color of a future
that’s a real cool scene
it’s the color of peace
it’s the color of smart
it’s the popular color
it’s the color with a heart
big green

CHAINS
Time was these woods rolled endless;
We rambled hill and hollow, seeking
secret pools and sweet berries, secure
in our endless sweet youth.
And all the while we were forging
and fastening chains: chains of family,
chains of failure, chains of financial
obligation. And chain saws and poison
and bulldozers ripped at our
neighbors the trees while our
chains distracted us. Perhaps
there was nothing we could have done.
“You don’t stand a chance against
My prayers” the Ghostdancer sang,
and daily we prayed, while logskidders
Growled at the edge of our meditation
And asphalt covered the country lanes.
The trees died just the same.
A few acres here and there,
we bought and saved.
Working to pay for them, we forged
More chains, but what else to do?
There remains this persimmon tree,
that berry patch; one secret,
unpolluted pool. We walk
our few familiar paths
and bless what freedom remains
between the links of our chains.

CLEAN UP MY NERVES
Clean up my nerves, boys, clean up my nerves
A little hit and a little sit
Every day I shut my face and
Clean up my nerves
THE COLLAPSE OF THE STATE VECTOR
the collapse of the state vector could be catastrophic 3x
the visionary life begins
where the sine waves on
it could all begin with a chemical spin
the tattered web of life just blowin in the wind
it would take a long time to begin it all again
could be sundown time for the brotherhood of man
DIZZY LITTLE LIZZIE
Let me tell ya ’bout a girl I used to know
Lizzie was her name
Lizzie, Lizzie she was only passin’ through
she didn’t come to stay
some say her daddy did her
and it spun her for a whirl
well, I don’t know for sure
but what was that grown man doin’ naked in the tub
with his teenage girl?
Chor:
You so dizzy miss lizzie
you can barely walk straight
you so dizzy miss lizzie
gonna meet your fate
she used to be polite and pretty
then she went fat and mean
wouldn’t listen to no one, no way
smokin’ drinkin’ screwin’
all the boys and girls
thirteen and out of control
her momma couldn’t stop her
though she got down on her knees
prayed for lizzie’s soul
and all of us who knew her just
felt so sad and blue
couldn’t slow her down
she had a little wisdom
liked to look at the sky
watch the clouds roll on
but she wouldn’t listen to nobody
so she ran out of luck
and got squashed flat by a big Mack truck
chor..
Now every day I pass the spot
where Lizzie met her fate
used to be some plastic flowers there
but now they’re gone
nothin’ marks the spot
her folks split up and moved away
her daddy never paid the price
her momma just denies it all
so do her brothers—they try to act brave
but when I can I slip away
and sit at the lonely spot
that’s dizzy little Lizzy’s grave
chor.
DON’T FORGET TO ROCK IT
Chopping wood, hauling water
ain’t the only thing that matters
Watching clouds, picking flowers
important ways to spend your hours
put your nose to the grindstone
it’ll just get flat
tell me,
who’s gonna get turned on by that?
Go on now, get you busy
twirling ’round until you’re dizzy
lay on the grass and let the world spin
just enjoy the shape that you’re in
sometimes you gotta work your ass off
other times you gotta blast off
always workin
never playin
is as bad
as never prayin’
but prayin is another topic
for now, just don’t forget to rock it
DRIFTING APART
my kids and i have grown apart step by step
we started out “ in agreement”
on the farm, we agreed about everything, or talked about it till we did
but have had to agree t disagree about more and more as time goes on
you love me
and I love you
but we’re driftin’ apart
and i don’t know what to do
Everybody knows (what they say ain’t so)
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
I’m just tellin’ what everybody knows
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Bush and Cheney have got to go
I’m just tellin’ what everybody knows
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows ‘bout the ‘lection they stole
I’m just tellin’ what everybody knows
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows where they got their gold
I’m just tellin’ what everybody knows
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Bush and Cheney have got to go
I’m just tellin’ what everybody knows
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
Everybody knows what they say ain’t so
I’m just tellin’ what everybody knows
EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE HAPPY
everybody wants to be happy
everybody wants to be loved
sometimes if you want to be happy
you have got to change your mind’

EYEBALL BLUES
Wanna jump into your eyeball
baby you jump into mine
we’ll both get all eyebally, baby,
it’ll be just fine
i’ll be deep in you
and you’ll be deep in me
people come lookin’ for us

a couple o’happy eyeballs
rollin’ around

and my body is filled with light
so i whipped out ol’ one eye
and filled her up alright
i said deep down in my nature

she said not comin’ or goin’s fine

FADING FLOWERS
It’s easy to be a pretty young flower
it takes the right attitude
for a bloom to fade gracefully
FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT
Fight for the right
to be exploited
fight for the right
to be exploited
fight for the right
fight for the right
fight for the right
rich folks robbin’ the poor folks blind
limbum says don’t pay it no mind
chor.
Fight for the right to a good bottom line
fight for the right of the rich to say
“i got mine”
fight for your right
to be treated like scum
GET USED TO IT
you better just
get used to it
don’t go and throw yourself
a hissy fit
quit fussin’ cause
you took a hit
go on, get used to it
you wanted all the girls
and all the gold
but those weren’t the cards
you got to hold
and the whole darn table knows
so go on, let go and fold
A HANDFUL OF HONEY
Give me a handful of honey. Honey
Can I finger your ring?
Can I kiss the goddess in you
Can I hear you sing?
You know I’m devoted, darling
Devoted to you
Let me know you’ll let me
Get to the depths of you
When I put your ring on my finger
Love starts pourin’ though
Almost more than I can balance
Slippin’ in your dew
So come on and trust me babe
To put my hands on you
Just ten little fingers sweetie
And then the big one too
GIVE WHAT YOU WANT TO RECEIVE
You gotta treat other people
like you wanna be treated
give your neighbors
what you like to receive
now that’s the thing we’re always doin’
whether or not you want to believe
‘spose tanks were rumblin’ out on your street
jet fighters screamin’ overhead?
soldiers come from another country
don’t care if they shoot you dead?
well they’re treatin’ you
like they wanna be treated
givin’ you
what they want to receive
but they don’t know that’s what they’re doin’
that ain’t the thing they believe
you might want to rise and strike them
but slow down baby, you don’t have to
you’ll just get back what you’re givin’
somebody else will do the job for you
GOLIATH
goliath makes me nervous
goliath gets me shy
goliath has nailed a lot of friends of mine
and majorly messed up their lives
now surenuff he’s goliath
but there ain’t no david in sight
could it be that i am him?
should i quit dodging the fight?
altho i’m a likely loser
i just might give it a try
it ain’t no fun fearing goliath
if i can’t stop him
i might as well die
GOMORRAH
I live in Gomorrah and I hate it..
I live in Gomorrah and I fear it
I live in Gomorrah and I love it
I can’t leave it
’cause there’s nowhere else to go
cept for maybe sodom
and we all know
that ain’t no place for a man to go
we all live in sodom and gomorrah
they’ve taken over the world
in every corner i search in
their evil tentacles are curled
been lookin’ hard for a just few just folks
jes’ folks is getting’ hard to find
money and power have gone everywhere
stolen everyone’s minds
GRATEFUL TO HER?
Grateful to her? For what?
Oh–she represents some aspect of me
That I reject? Yeah, right. We’re not alike at all
.Found that out the hard way.
When I showed her all the deep,
Scary stuff I’d hidden from everyone
Else, when I trusted her with my heart
Of hearts, she made a face
And an ugly noise, and took a big step
Back. Left me feeling like a fool.
(Not that our friends hadn’t warned me. Not
That she hadn’t warned me.)
And we’d had such good times
Leading up to that awful moment.
(Sometimes, sometimes not–honestly.)
Funny how much alike our fathers seemed—
We joked about them playing golf
Together, never talking about us,
Their prodigal children–why, if
Our fathers are alike, we might be, too!
No–I’m not cold and distant
And cutting, like her, I mean
,I’m no longer the guy
Who walked away from
The fifteen-year old runaway
Who depended on him–that was
Thirty years ago. (Where is she now?)
I’m not the guy
Who left his kids home alone
To go be with his girlfriend.
That was ten years ago.
(Why don’t my kids ever call?)
And I’m not the guy
Who told his wife of
Twenty years he’d never loved her-
-Stood and watched while she shuddered
And twisted and hardened her heart—
That was eight years ago.
(Did I really mean it? I still
Don’t know.) And I’m definitely
Not the guy who got pissed at
His best friends and gave away
All their secrets–sure, it’s only
Been five years, but aren’t we
Over that already? Aren’t we
Adults? Haven’t we
Reincarnated several times
Since then? No, I’m not
Heartless, selfish and rejecting
Like she is. Why be grateful to her?
HAVEN’T HEARD FROM YOU
haven’t heard from you in a while
trust you are just having too damn much fun to go fool with a computer
hope your dad’s doing ok
hope to see you again some day
life’s soap opera here
continues with its humdrum
and its flashes of illumination
that let me see that we seem to be
spiralling slowly upwards
not down
or round and round
hell is for other people
rich amerikan christians
sending poor people to hell
jesus loves me this i know
the suv im drivin tells me so
Hooked on what’s happening
I’m hooked on what’s happening
Hooked on what’s happening
Hooked on what’s happening
Anger, greed and ignorance
Make the world go ’round
Anger, greed and ignorance
Keep on draggin’ me down
to that crazy, blue-eyed clown
‘Cause I’m hooked on what’s happening
Hooked on what’s happening
Hooked on what’s happening
hope for the future
we sat on a porch
in the summer dark
laughed and sang,
watched fireflies spark
chor:
and tho there was a war
life was good
and there might be a bomb
life was good
there was hope for the future
hope for the future
there was hope for the future
life was good
we had a dream that made us glad
could see a new world where none was sad
chor.
we marched, protested, politicked
went to jail, did well, got sick
chor.
and if it seemed some folks were scared
truth would set them free—why should we care?
chor.
until the day they grabbed the reins
turned the wagon ’round, erased our gains
now there is a war
is life good?
now there is a bomb
is life good?
and there is fear for the future, fear for the future, fear for the future
there is fear
now fear is ruler everywhere
bright lights disrupt the summer night
no more our songs, and dreams we share
will we ever get back there?
to our hope for the future
hope for the future\
hope for the future
hope for the future
hope for the future
hope for the future
ahh….
i can’t tell you
i can’t tell you
to do the thing i’m doing
even tho i really
wish you would
i can’t ask you
to come and go with me
even tho i really
think you should
sometimes this way is full of honey
sometimes this way is full of fire
you don’t hardly get what
you thought you asked for
but you always get
your heart’s desire
i can’t tell you
to do the thing i’m doing
even tho i really
wish you would
i can’t ask you
to come and go with me
even tho i really
think you should
if you do the thing i’m doing
it might drive you crazy
if you come go with me
it might make you sad
if you do the thing i’m doing
you might lose all your money
and every single friend
you ever had
i’d rather be me
i’d rather be me
and wish i had money
than have a lotta money
and wish i was me
verses inspired by b’s office scene—overweight, diseased, etc.
i’m not sorry
i’m not sorry i took your wife away from you
i’m not sorry i left you feeling blue
it was something i just had to do
i’m not sorry i took your wife away from you
you never seemed to understand her moods
i tried to teach you something that i knew
but she learned the lesson better than you
so i’m not sorry i took your wife away from you
you yelled at her ’cause she wouldn’t talk to you
and when that didn’t work you left her black and blue
i guess she just had better things to do
i’m not sorry i took your wife away from you
i’m proud to be the man who wrecked your home
you’re such a jerk, you’re better off alone
your kids may understand you when they’re grown
i’m proud to be the man who wrecked your home
she really loved you once, i know it’s true
she cried when she knew you and her were through
but you mistreated her i know you know it’s true
i’m not sorry i took your wife away from you

I am always dwelling in the light, in the light
I am always dwelling in the light
The shadow is a shadow of the light, in the light
The shadow is a shadow in the light
The shadow is a shadow in the light, of the light
The shadow is a shadow of the light
insert and squirt (the facts of life)
Chor:
insert and squirt
insert and squirt
God made me to insert and squirt
Gonna feel frustrated, gonna feel hurt
if I don’t get to insert and squirt
It’s been the way of evolution
But now it’s time for a new solution
Time for a sexual revolution
Time to flip the energy
Say, “it’s about you, girl
not about me”
chor.
Too many women feelin’ used
too many women been abused
too many women turnin’ tricks
so guys can get their jizzy fix
too many kids havin’ kids
hardly knowin’ what they did
bringing unwanted children to this earth
’cause daddy had to insert and squirt
chor.
I tried to sell my soul but they weren’t buying
I tried to sell my soul but they weren’t buying
the devil said i didn’t have a prayer
now i’m alone in heaven
cause my friends all went to hell
i wish i was with them down there
all day i fly about and rest on cloudbanks
i join in choirs that sing eternal praise
i feel eternal bliss but my heart’s not in it
i wish i’d raised more hell back in the day
i loved to dream of wine and pretty women
i longed for the curses wealth can bring
i asked the devil what i could do for him to get them
and all the devil said was, “not a thing.”
yes the devil told me that he didn’t want me
he said to quit wasting his time
muttered something about the way
my folks had raised me
and to him i was not worth a dime
IT’S POISON
europe australia
america too
the poisons run rampant
and come home to roost
anger is no excuse
it’s poison
desire is no excuse
it’s poison
ignorance is no excuse
it’s poison
I WISH I COULD STILL GET STONED/IT’S BEEN TOO LONG SINCE I BLEW MY MIND
Used to stand outside in the rain
for the fun of it
used to live outside the law
never even flinch a bit
used to swear I’d learn to live
by wavin’ a magic wand
now I’m livin’ with a 401K,
buyin stocks and bonds
chor:
And I can still breathe a little,
though the noose is tight
sometimes I wish I could still get stoned
hoot and holler on a saturday night
And me and the missus,
yeah we’re doin’ fine
ain’t been down to the swingers’ club
in a long, long time
but I love her and she loves me
and the pills we both take
help set us free
thank god for insurance
from the company
chor.
I used to pray it would all go away
Leave me alone and free
But now I guess I’ve got to admit
That ol’ system’s takin’ care of me
I give them everything they want
and they give something back to me
I wish I was still in love with you
chor:
I wish I was still in love with you
I hate to see you all alone and blue
wishin’ ain’t enough to make it true
but i wish I was still in love with you
We loved each other for such a long time
House and kids and all
then we woke one morning in a different world
our life together seemed way to small
chor.
So we went off to find ourselves
and after a while i found
i knew what it meant to be me, alright
but you were noplace around
chor.
then someone grew into my heart
till she filled the space you fled
and tho i know i’m happy with her now
sometimes i wish for you instead
chor.
it’s funny the way things happen
the changes we make to be whole
so now i’m doin’ alright, I guess–
or is your sorrow a stain on my soul?
chor.

I’m listening to your music
In a corporate superstore
We were gonna make a revolution
Now you’re all gone
And I’m a corporate superwhore
LIFE ON EARTH
Suddenly in late night headlights
Over on the side of the road
Possum writhing on his back
Death agonies, no car in sight ahead
How long drawn out his torture?
Reverse, run him over again,
Mercy killing? Too far back
Possum in pain, dying alone
Falls away into the night
How he saw it?
Fast approaching, in the night
Incomprehensible speed, noise, light
And pain. Overwhelming pain
Seeking sex, seeking food
Or just looking for a home
Interrupted, ends in death,
Death from out of nowhere
And it isn’t only possums
So many of us, deep in the grip
Of whatever drives us
Crushed by the incomprehensible
Rambling down the road of life
Spine shattered, guts busted,
heart still beating , nerves too keen,
nothing there to give us comfort
as we breath our painful last
This is life on Earth
LONG-GONE LOVE
One bright day I stopped by
The lonely old shack
that you left to find Jesus
and you ain’t been back
it’s so long abandoned
about to fall down
but I felt your memory
still hangin’ around
amid all the trash
that littered the floor
I found your old diary
from a long time before
before you had met me
when you still loved your man
back before he hurt you
and you up and ran
I stood there and read it
I read it clear through
it was simple and open
just like talkin’ to you
then I stood there thinkin’
’bout the love that we shared
rememberin’ you cryin
cause your man didn’t care
LITTLE BY LITTLE
i went up the hill
and looked down at myself
and I said, “Self,
you’re a mess”
so i got on my knees
and i prayed,”Lord, please
please help me–
I been a bad boy, I confess.”
then the Lord came to me
in a blaze of white lights
and she showed me another way
but she said, “looky here,
I gotta make it clear–
I can’t do this every day.
“but every day of your life
i can whisper to you
if you’ll just take the time
to tune in
so do what you must
to do what you can–
ready?! set?! begin!
so now I call her up
every chance that I get
and I let her heart
guide me along
Thanks to her I do right
more and more of the time.
and i’m praising her grace
with this song
now, thanks to her
i am growing wiser
i am growing wiser
i am growing wiser
little by little and day by day
little by little and day by day
my heart’s opening wider (same)
my love’s growing stronger (same)
LOVIN’ LUST
i like your pretty shoes
i like the way your feet move
i like your pretty shoes
i wanna dance with you
the way you touch your hair
i know you know i care
i know you trust me girl
trust me to take you there
clothes—hold close
breath—kiss
scent—do you deep and make you shriek

Missing You
to K.M. (Kali Ma)
I can’t recall the pressure
of your fingers on
my cheek anymore,
or the scent of your hair
moist under moonlight.
The rhythm of our life together
is gone from my mind.
My heart sits like a rock
in my muddy chest.
Your brother and all our other
friends talk to me endlessly of
emptiness, joy, release–
but this emptiness without you
is no joy and no release.
How could it be,
without your emptiness
calling me to fill it?
What face will you wear
when I see you again?
Young and blue-eyed?
Shining dark eyes set
in kind wrinkles?
Or will you laugh,
let back your hood,
reveal empty sockets
and lipless teeth?
Even so, I will welcome you.
Please come soon.
NATURAL WISDOM
Well I shoulda been a preacher
But tthere’s no church for what I preach
Or I shoulda been a teacher
But there’s no school for what I teach
Or I shoulda been a politician
But I wouldn’t be corrupted
So there’s no place for me
In a political niche
So I sell you your food
And I take out the garbage
And sometimes you see me
Pushin’ a broom
And I’m helpful and I’m kind
And sometimes I’m even funny
Till I walk out of the store
And go back to my room
And work and pray for a way
To overturn the powers
That create the system
That I live inside
That keep me well-fed and warm
And give me toys to play with
Phones to call on and a car to ride
You might ask why
I’m tryin to bite the hand that feeds me
But the guy’s other hand is around my neck
And I’m tryin’ to get that crazy man’s attention
Cause while he’s choking me
He’s headin’ for a wreck
Thinkin’ he can save himself
If I only pay the check
I can’t say I know
How this game is gonna play out
I can’t say I know
If the lottery will pay out
I just keep doin’ what I can
And lettin’ go of what I can’t
I’ll write and I’ll vote
And I’ll march and I’ll rant
Babylon, Babylon, your throne is gonna go down
Just like they always say in the Rasta chant
You think you’re mighty clever
But I bet we will outlast you
‘Cause nature bats last and
We’re in her camp
Yeah nature bats last and we’re in her camp
Yeah nature bats last and we’re in her camp

And sometimes I’m even funny
Till I leave the store at night
And go back to my room
At home I’m writing letters and I’m signing petitions
On my day off you might find me on the street
Bearing witness to the murder
That supports our wealth and power
And when I get a private moment
Then I’m on my knees
Prayin’ hard, prayin’ daily
Every morning and night
For a lightning bolt to strike
And make things right
Cause the country is asleep and
The president’s a dolt
I pray you Lord make me a lightning bolt
May I be roused from my slumber
May I rouse all around me
May the roused all rise and take back our lives
May those who rape the earth
see the shame in what they’re doin’
May those who grind the poor give their wealth away
Don’t need no MTV ORV SUV ROTC
They’re all just a form of WMD
I feel a little crazy ‘cause I’m livin’
On a corporate paycheck
And the corporation pays me well
But the president is stealin’ from all the employees
And if we don’t stop him we’ll all go to hell
So that’s why I’m tryin’ hard
To bite the hand that feeds me
cause the bastard’s other hand
Is around my neck
He thinks he can kill us all
And get away with murder
He’s too crazy to know
He can’t escape the wreck
So ladylord please send down a lightning jolt
Ladylord please make me a lightning bolt
Ladylord dear ladylord put us all at ease
Ladylord dear ladylord save the dolphins and the trees
So I’m watchin’ and I’m waitin’ and I’m hopin’ for the best
Lord let’s find a way to end this trouble comin’ every day
Lord let’s find a way to end this trouble comin’ every day
Lord let’s find a way to end this trouble comin’ every day

May I always be happy
And fully satisfy everyone I encounter.
May I always be loving towards others
Free from selfish desire, anger, and ignorance.
OM VAJRAPANI HUNG
Absorb me in the ground of your being
And purify my basic awareness.
May I always feel at home
And appreciate the world as your teaching display.
Even when the time of my death is at hand,
May I be free from selfish desire, anger, and ignorance.
OM AH HUNG HRI
ONE TOUCH
one touch is worth a thousand words
OTHER PEOPLES’ PROBLEMS
it’s so easy to solve
other people’s problems
you look at them and know
just what to do
but no one knows me
half as well as i do
so don’t be givin’ me
your point of view
O THESE MAUDLIN EMOTIONS
So now it’s over.
We never hiked that battlefield.
I never brought you jewlery
or even took you out to dinner.
We never swayed slow entwined
on a dance floor, never
spent a gentle night
listening to the rain
on my tin roof porch.
You’d asked for another
evening of those long,
long kisses, kisses
with no destination
beyond sweet kissing.
I guess you don’t want that
anymore.
And I guess you never
let me in to your
heart of hearts–how
could you, since I never slew
your deepest fears?
No, I was never quite
your knight in shining armor.
And I guess
I’m sorry if I scared you
with this me I so
take for granted….
Now all the magical possibilities
have faded like the flowers I
bring you no longer; now
you go your way, I go mine
and all the dreams and plans
of our joined lives
fade stillborn into impossibility.
So now it’s over?
We never even fought and made up…
Some other lifetime, again, perhaps….
(SINCE I JUMPED INTO YOUR) PUMPKIN PATCH
since I jumped in your pumpkin patch
my room’s a mess my socks don’t match
i’m not quite sure what state i’m in
i quit my job i’m growing thin
2x
down here in your pumpkin patch (my room’s a mess)
down here in your pumpkin patch (my socks don’t match)
since i jumped in your pumpkin patch
i itch in places i can’t scratch
i cannot seem to light a match
the light inside my mind’s too bright
sometimes it keeps me up at night
2X
down here in your pumpkin patch (the light inside my mind’s too bright)
down here in your pumpkin patch (sometimes it keeps me up at night )
but all in all, it seems to me
i’ve never before felt this free
and, altho i’ve lost some weight
i happily accept my fate
2X
down here in your pumpkin patch (i happily accept my fate)
down here in your pumpkin patch (i happily accept my fate)
to live here going sane with you
is all i ever want to do
to tote the wood, to feed the fire
and slowly spiral ever higher
2x
from down here in your pumpkin patch (and slowly spiral ever higher)
from down here in your pumpkin patch (and slowly spiral ever higher)
and somehow, sometime we will know
a place where there’s no place to go
we’ll gaze upon no room and then
we’ll know it’s where we’ve always been
2x
down here in your pumpkin patch (we’ll know it’s where we’ve always been)
down here in your pumpkin patch (we’ll know it’s where we’ve always been)
REMODELLING TIME
guess who’s comin’ your way today 4x
2x
i’m gonna swing my hammer in your house
make you happy with the way i knock it out
you gonna love the way i swing it
gonna swing it till you sing it
i’m gonna swing my hammer in your house
2x girl you makin’ me a happy man
and i’m treatin’ you the best that i can
girl you fill my heart with joy
make me glad that i’m your boy
girl you makin’ me a happy man
2x
girl you know i got to come and stay
don’t think that it could be some other way
let’s make our home together
let’s see how it gets better
girl, you know I got to come and stay.
Shake the west awake
Shake the west awake
Shake the west awake
How many shocks will it take
To shake the west awake
Liars in high places
And fools on the hill
Hands on their crotches
And hands in the till
Fingers on the button
Fingers in their ears
Fingers in all the pies
And fingers up their arse
Thumbs on their noses
And thumbs on the poor
Thumbs on scales
Just to squeeze a little more
Shake the west awake
Shake the west awake
How many shocks will it take
To shake the west awake
Poison in the rivers
And poison in the fields
Poison in our bodies
SIREN SOUND
when i first moved to town
siren sound brought me down
then it came to me
siren sound
means someone’s goin’ down
SITTIN’ HERE THINKIN
I let you in my door
you sat down in my mind
we talked a long, long time
I opened up my heart to you
what else was I supposed to do
you thrilled me through and through and through
you took me home
(back up and out?)
I’m just sittin here thinkin
about how i shouldn’t be thinkin
about you
I’m just sittin here thinkin
about how I shouldn’t be thinkin
at all
SLOUCHING TOWARDS BETHLEHEM
Hiking in the San Juans
where once high meadows rolled,
verdant with flowers,
we found deep, barren
snowfields–returned to a
home hotter and drier than ever,
save occasional tornadoes
and torrential thunderstorms:
forests fall beneath their blows.
The news: Florida and Mexico
on fire: evacuations, closed
roads, burned towns.
In the mail, solicitation
from a local politician:
he’ll give the police more power
to combat sex and drug offenders,
build more prisons, purge
the welfare rolls. His
opponent only promises
to do a better job of this.
I meet too many people
gone ignorantly mad from
lack of initiation, unfulfillable
promises, loveless lives,
their understandable anger
subdued by physicians’
pills as if the hopelessness
at hand were what has always
been there.
Daily, I pray
for compassion and understanding;
the howl from the void ahead
grows only louder.
This heart of mine–
broken many times,
scarred now–it might
break easily, but
it hardly opens.
Shopworn–
offered so many times–
refused, returned,
or taken back–
bits of it scattered
through the past, its
finish dull and tarnished.
I’m not so ashamed
of its appearance
that I will only hide it–
but I now resolve
to give up hoping
for someone else to heal it
and do the job myself–
not that I couldn’t be
talked into sharing….
And how to heal this tattered
artifact,so unattractive, yet
still so full of fire and longing?
Damn all fear of looking foolish!
I’ll stoke these passions
‘till they glow white, go clear,
illuminate the world, and draw
Who comes when a lamp is lit
upon a hill.
song for the martyrs
the jails are full of martyrs
from my church
tho the government denies
that’s what they are
3x
the government denies it
the government denies that’s what they are
people who took too much liberty
for the guardians of the land of the free
they all thought the right to be happy
was enshrined in our nation’s laws
but they got just a little
too happy for the Eagle
now he’s got them in his claws.
SUCH A BLESSING
my problems are such a blessing
i live in a place that i love
my problems are such a blessing
i’ve got a happy family
my problems are such a blessing
my wife she loves me so
my problems are such a blessing
we’ve all got plenty to eat
my problems are such a blessing
nobody’s shooting at me
SYMPTOMS
you can try to deny it
close your eyes and pretend
but civilization
is coming to an end
enough stubborn people
enough selfishness
gets everyone in trouble
the fabric is rent
tbe fabric unravels
there’s no safety net
wherever you flee to
it all comes undone
the money dries up
the food doesn’t come
law and order depend
on the power of guns
(more verses on culture/civilization/humanity coming to an end)
TALKING
yeah, we’re talking about
how to talk about
what we’re talking about
THE DEVIL’S MORALS
It’s the devil’s morals that make pleasure a vice and clever greed and selfishness a virtue.
Alas, to see the devil’s morals loose in the land!
May those who are currently running (away with) our country live a good long time, the better to have a chance to see the error of their ways and repent; for were they to die soon they would surely be damned. I would not care to see them damned, but I would rejoice to see them indicted. As it is, they have largely seized control of the courts and so their indictment is unlikely—and so, having used their clever greedy selfishness to assure their material success, they may well have condemned themselves to damnation. Nevertheless, I pledge to do whatever I can to save their souls.
May the light of truth
Shine out of my mouth
May it enlighten and illuminate
Everything and everyone
May the fire of truth
Blaze out of my mouth
May it warm every heart it touches
And finish cooking
The half-baked.
May the roar of the blazing fire of truth
From my mouth
Be sweet rockin’ music
To all who love truth and honesty
And provide solid direction
To all who have not yet found
Their way in life.
And may the smoke
From the fire of truth
Billow out my mouth
In sweet incense clouds
Bringing joy, laughter,
And inspiration
To every madcap monk
And sweet, sexy nun
On this hopeless, inevitable,
Inconceivable, unstoppable crusade.
THE LAUGHING PLAGUE
Not so many years ago
though it seems another age
a fate befell the human race
we call “the laughing plague”
And no one knows what started it
or from where it came
it happened everywhere at once
from Malibu to Mumbai
no one was completely immune
from the bug that ate mankind
but that was ok with everyone
’cause it made us feel so fine
it brought no flush of fever
no aching in the bones
just a rush of understanding
of who we are, and why
and what the times were demanding
and it didn’t feel grim
when the bug kicked in
it made everything seem so funny
I was one of those
who had a very light dose
but I laughed for days
with my nose all runny
So most folks knew it was their time to die
and found they could accept it
and they found death came
not with a spasm of pain
but a flood of bliss and light
now we who survived
we’re all glad we’re alive
though we miss so many of our loved ones
but we and they know
that a lot of people had to go
and for sure they all died happy
with so many fewer folks
there’s a lot more room
for the natural world to recover
more fish in the seas
more monkeys in the trees
cleaner air, land and water all over
and us humans who remain
won’t make the same mistakes again
we treasure the world and one another
’cause that laughin’ disease
left our minds at ease
and lovin’ all creatures as our brothers
the happy plague
what the world needs nowhere
is a happy plague
one that fills you with so much joy
that you could die
and you do
o for death to be
such ecstasy
that i wouldn’t care
if it happened to me
or even my best friend’s
we need a plague of pleasure
so lots and lots of people
could die happy
and relieve our Mother of the
burden of humanity
quickly and easily
without a nasty legacy
of pain and agony
some kind of cosmic lottery
so no one’s pulling triggers
no one’s withholding aid
so several billion people
could go quick and happy
to their graves
could be me, could be you
could be no one that we knew
no way to be sure
till it’s done and over
THE MISTS OF AVALON
I long for the mists of Avalon
I’d love to fade away
From the world of push and jangle,
The world of bought and sold
I long for a world of loving friends
A world of balance and grace
A world where there’s plenty of time
A world with a heart of gold
O where are the mists of Avalon
That will draw us away from this race (madness?)
Into another dimension
Where we can be who (what?) we truly are
But there’s no escape from this madness
There’s nowhere else we can go
There’s only our hearts to hold the treasure
of Avalon’s embrace
So please, divine ones
Enter my heart, be my heart
So I may meet all madness
With the calm of the misty mornings
of avalon long ago
the road not taken
once i walked with you down a country lane
now i’m drivin’ alone on the superhighway
once we swore our love would never die
don’t know where love went and i don’t know why
i turned left where you turned right
down the road not taken
chor:
the road not taken
still haunts my dreams
the road not taken
still calls to me
(the road not taken)
but i can’t turn back
(the road not taken)
it’s not there any more
the road not taken
bridge:
did we know each other a little too well?
did pride and anger cast a spell?
why did heaven start to look like hell?
but i still hear the echo of temple bells
from the road not taken
chor.
once i stood on the killing floor
angry, but sure’ i knew the score
i said, “i’m not gonna take it any more
i’m alright, thank you jack
and I slammed the gate
and i turned my back
on the road not taken
chor.
TOGETHER WE’RE GONE
sit in my lap
let’s meditate on energy
we can pass it ’round
right through our clothes
gonna light you up
just like electricity
and why we do it,
Goodness knows!
snakes are coiling
crawling up
around my spine
waterfalls are flowing
down my chest
I pray time finds me
twined with you like this
the moment after cardiac arrest!
your best friend’s meditating
in the upper room
praying loud and clear without a sound
she understands that none of this
is what it seems
that’s why we both like
having her around
bridge:
and i’m the king
and you’re the queen
together we
are such a scene
you are the void
i am the form
together we
are gone, gone, gone, gone, gone….
conclusion?
TO MY GRANDCHILDREN
This old world is such a mess
And I feel so powerless
Sometimes I just want to scream and cry
And break things
Here comes another generation
Sorry we’re leaving such a mess
Lord knows, we tried our very best
Didn’t meet with much success
Forgive us
All across the world
So much suffering and pain
People rise in protest,
Get beaten down,
And rise, and get beaten down again
So many of us saw the truth
Did what we could, and spent our youth
Not much to show for it, I guess
Sorry we’ve left you such a mess
Please forgive us
Please forgive us
Please forgive us
TOO MANY MEM’RIES
I’ve got too many mem’ries
To remember them all
Done too many things
That I’d like to forget
Had a lot of good times
I can’t quite recall
I’ve got too many mem’ries
To remember
We were out for dinner
At our favorite club
Celebrating our anniversary
‘Twas the place where we met
you told me about it all
I was glad to hear it,
It was all news to me
Chor.
I’ve traveled far
And I’ve traveled wide
I’ve traveled high
And I’ve traveled deep
Sometimes it seems
Like it all was a dream
I can’t remember
When I wake from sleep
Chor.
WALTZING WITH GOD
Is this all there is?
Dear Lord I want to know
So God please give me a call
Or at least a wink and a nod
Are we nothing but toys?
Is there a reason we’re here?
Dear God, please make it clear
I want to live my life right
Dear God,
If you’ve nothing to say
Well I guess that’s OK
My life’s the blink of an eye
And I guess you move slow
But I’d sure like to know
What it’s all about down here
Is this life just a game?
Or is there an aim?
Was Jesus the the only one?
Are we all your daughters and sons?
You don’t have to send no heavenly hosts
Or angels in flight
Don’t need to see no Holy Ghost
Just want to know I’m livin’ life right
WE’RE ALL STILL HERE
all the moving movies
all the stirring songs
all the demonstrations
all the revelations
all the meditations
and female ejaculations
and in spite of all our hopes
and in spite of all our fears
and in spite of prophecy
We’re all still here
barreling towards oblivion
we’re all still here
evolving into supermen
none of it seems to matter
nothing makes a difference
nothing even slows us down
repeat:
going one way or another
going nowhere at all
we were gonna fly free forever
we were gonna fly free forever
it was gonna be easy skanking
only gonna love ruby tuesdays
we could live in a tent
now we gotta go see the doctor
take out the garbage
pay down the mortgage
or treadmill the rent
why does the whole world spin?
Atoms stars planets galaxies life
all goes ’round in circles
why?
what sets the world to spinnni’
why does the whole world spin?
When first we met
When first we met, at your urging
I tore the ragged bedsheets
From my previous marriage
Into strips, to mark what trees
We’d cut for your new house.
“How auspicious,” I thought,
Electricity surging
Through our minds, our hearts,
Our bellies. We would merge, it seemed,
Until the oily scum of fear
Oozed between us:
You wondered if my feet
Were really on the ground;
I questioned your willingness
To go to the far limit.
We plunge down and away from each other,
Swearing all the while we’re soaring higher alone.
WOUNDED WOMEN
you better be careful, boy,
around wounded women
yeah you better be careful, boy,
around wounded women
she gave me my first kiss
when i was just sixteen
all it was was just a kiss,
but i remembered
and when the maze of years
again brought us together
if what she said about her folks was true
she sure needed healin’
but if what she said was lies
she needed healin’ too
you’re just a heartache waiting to happen
you’re just a
heartache waiting to happen
here i go
playin’ the fool
you’re just a
heartache waiting to happen
here i go
breakin’ all the rules
you’re just a
heartache waiting to happen
it’s too late to stop and think
you’re just a
heartache waiting to happen
why am i buyin’ you a drink
you’re just a
heartache waiting to happen
i wonder how you’ll finally make me cry
you’re just a
heartache waiting to happen
is that a smile or a sneer in your eye?
